Apologies for not having a post last week friends, real life became a bit too much to deal with, and I was trying to get all the hours in with Little Known Galaxy, which, so far, gets my highest recommendation.
Happy Monday! Here are five indies to keep an eye out for this week.
JustAxe - May 27
A tale of a girl and her axe, and pioneers against aliens! I don’t have a lot of background on this one; it was the art style that jumped out at me. I really enjoyed seeing the vibrant colors and the style of the protagonist, and not to mention I loved the concept. A little girl and her axe looking to save her sister (and the world)? Sign me up.
Rack and Slay - May 27
Indie game developer making stuff you haven't played before.
The line above comes from Ludokultur’s page on Steam, and it’s quite on the nose, especially after watching the trailer for Rack and Slay. You should keep an eye on this one because of the Balatro effect - who would have guessed that a poker roguelike would be one of the best games of the year nearly six months into things? Fun fact, LocalThunk was a beta tester and gives the game their full stamp of approval.
Also, this one will cost a budget-friendly $5.99!
Nine Sols - May 29
When I see Sekiro or Dark Souls in a description for something, I tend to click away. (They're just not my jam, and that's fine.) The art style and music really got me in the demo, even though I was terrible at it. And “Nine Sols?” I'm a sucker for great puns, especially about cats.
Quest Master - May 29 (Early Access) // Also available on: Epic Games Store
This isn’t just a dungeon crawler, it’s a dungeon MAKER, and after playing the demo I can’t wait for the Early Access release. After playing Mario Maker back in the day, I dreamed of someone coming up with this in other applications.
It’ll be launching with three themes, online dungeon publishing and a Castle Town with mini-games, but within the first few months, the road map for Quest Master adds more themes, new enemies, a single-player story mode complete with side quests, and EVEN MORE.
A Cat & His Boy - May 30
Don't let the super-simple style take you away from this one. Most of us have a story about a time where an animal helped us through a difficult period. A Cat & His Boy is told through the eyes of Midnight the cat as he strives to help his human (Leif) deal with his parents divorce.
(And there's a dedicated “meow” button!)
In addition to Steam, A Cat & His Boy will also release on Nintendo Switch.
I'm seeing souch about Rack and Slay, might have to give it a go. And I never thought I'd enjoy Souls-like games but after being sucked into No Rest For The Wicked, I might have to give Nine Sols a try!
